PHOTOGRAPHS AND DENTAL RADIOGRAPHS OF SHELL MOUND BUILDERS IN THE STATE OF SÃO PAULO

Abstract

This photobook is a product of a Ph.D. thesis that aimed to estimate the age of archaeological individuals in shell mounds in the state of São Paulo through forensic dentistry estimation methods. Dental radiographs of individuals from five archaeological sites – Capelinha 1, Buracão, Piaçaguera, Moraes & Tenório – were obtained, and the archaeological pieces were also photographed. This material is part of the archaeological collection of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnology (MAE) of the University of São Paulo. This photobook includes images, notes, and/or observations that were considered relevant in our data analysis and may guide further research about shell mounds in the state of São Paulo. The material contained herein was prepared in collaboration with graduate students and professors at the Department of Social Dentistry and the Department of Stomatology of the School of Dentistry and the MAE in the University of São Paulo. We would like to acknowledge and thank the enthusiasm and efforts of collaborators for their assistance, from sample selection to radiographic imaging and photographing.
